Emo is short for emotive or emotional hardcore. It is a set of social/ideological beliefs and tastes.

Emo Music
Emo music is a mix of hardcore punk and metal. Depending on how die-hard your definition of emo is it can encompass any band that plays with emotion and/or screams and/or has emotive lyrics. Typical emo bands can include Dashboard Confessional, Fall Out Boy and any number of other hardcore crossover bands – Thrice, From First To Last, Funeral For A Friend etc.

Emo music evolved from its original roots, the Washington DC ’80s hardcore scene with bands like Rites of Spring, Embrace, Soulside and Moss Icon.

In the early to mid 90s, many people became disillusioned with Hardcore music, especially in the Midwest where several bands embraced the idea of a more melodic sound as well as a more “Emotional” feel. The Emo scene and “look” began to cement in the public conciousness as the music was popularized by successful labels such as Victory Records and major record labels began to take notice.

Emo music often includes screaming, crying or other outpourings of emotion.

Emo Fashion
Emo dress tends to follow lines of nonconformity almost without exception, but individual styles may vary as long as they continue to emphasize second hand goods or a general expression of indifference toward current fashion trends. A popular staple of emo fashion is wearing vintage T-shirts or t-shirts of popular emo bands.

Emo Hair
Hair is another important area of the emo culture. The hair is another place individuals can express themselves and go against society by being different. Emo hairstyles are usually either jet black, highlighted, or a variety of dyed colours but rarely a natural colour. It is usually straight with long bangs brushed to one side, often covering an eye.

An Emo guy or girl has a definitive sense of style, with both their clothing and their hair. “Emo kids” usually wear mostly black clothing with very tight jeans (the guys might even wear girls’ jeans), tees emblazoned with the name of a rock band, studded belts, canvas sneakers or other black shoes, and thick, black horn-rimmed glasses.

The Emo hairstyle has evolved over time. Most Emo kids have black hair, but this is less important for the guys. The Emo guy is usually characterized with hair that is long enough to go past the ears with fringe falling over one eye. Some guys also sport a shaggier Emo looks that are purposefully made to look unkempt.

A popular look for girls is much like that for the guys, with the hair being down and pulled over one eye. Some girls cut their own hair or have a friend do it, trimming their fringe straight across. Other girls also wear their hair with clips. The Emo hairstyle for girls is usually with black hair, but many girls with a more two-toned look, with one color on the top and another color on the bottom.

While these are common hairstyles and styles of dressing, there is so much diversity across the United States that all of the Emo look cannot be captured with just one or two types. For many, it’s all about the music, and for others, it’s all about having great hair. Regardless, Emo hairstyles and fashions are in and don’t seem to be fading anytime soon.
